How to Read a Quilt Pattern: 7 Essential Tips for Success
Quilt patterns can be tricky, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned quilter. If you’re just starting out, the terminology can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry—I’ve got you covered!
1. Print Out the Pattern (or Use a Digital App)
Have you ever started a quilt pattern, only to get distracted by another one and leave the first in the dreaded UFO (unfinished object) pile? It happens to the best of us! Keeping track of your progress makes it easier to pick up where you left off.
If you’re using a downloadable quilt pattern, print out a copy to make notes and mark off completed steps. Prefer to go paperless? Apps like Goodnotes allow you to annotate directly on your tablet—an eco-friendly way to stay organized!
2. Take Notes on the Quilt Pattern
Whether you’re using a printed copy or a digital version, make sure to take notes! Marking off finished steps, jotting down adjustments, and tracking your cutting diagrams will help you stay on top of the process.
3. Read the Entire Pattern Before You Start
Sometimes a question in Step 2 is answered in Step 22! Before cutting your fabric, read through the entire pattern so you understand how the pieces come together. This will help you avoid mistakes and confusion later.
4. Get Familiar with Quilting Terms and Tools

Many quilt patterns also include a reference section with explanations of key terms and techniques—so be sure to check it out before you start sewing!
5. Watch for the Asterisk (*)
That little asterisk (*) is more important than you think! Designers use it to point out additional information, fabric alternatives, or extra instructions later in the pattern. Be sure to follow these references so you don’t miss important details.
6. Look for Common Elements in Quilt Patterns
Most quilt patterns include the following key sections:

✅ Cutting Instructions – A breakdown of fabric cuts
✅ Cutting Diagrams – Visual guides for cutting fabric
✅ Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions – Directions for assembling blocks
✅ Quilt Layout Diagrams – How to arrange blocks for each quilt size
Some modern quilt patterns even include colouring sheets so you can plan your quilt layout (like some in my printable patterns!).
7. Use Links in Digital Patterns
If you’re using a PDF quilt pattern, don’t ignore those clickable links! Many designers include direct access to video tutorials, blog posts, and step-by-step guides to help you through the process. You might even find a related class or sew-along to follow!
And if you need more info, a quick Google search of the designer’s name can often lead you to additional resources for the quilt pattern you're working on.
